Newport News School Board fills vacant seat

The Newport News School Board has made an appointment to fill the vacant school board seat on Friday.

Maritsa Alger, a retired elementary school principal from Norfolk Public Schools, will now represent the Central District. Her term ends June 30.

“Alger brings a wealth of education experience to the School Board,” according to a news release from Newport News Public Schools. “During her 32-year career, she served as a teacher, inclusion specialist, building program specialist, assistant principal and principal.”

Alger and fills the seat left by Shelly Simonds, who was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates on Nov. 5.
