Update: The closure that was scheduled to run from June 23-26 has been canceled.
NORFOLK — The city will close a roadway this weekend under 1-264 as crews perform construction work, according to a news release.
Southbound lanes on Kempsville Road between the signal at Center Drive to Blackstone Street will close from 7 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday so workers can drill shafts in the median for a new bridge, which will become the new collector-distributor road on I-264 east.
A detour in place will send traffic left on Center Drive, right on Newtown Road and then back on Kempsville Road, according to a VDOT release.
Entrances to First Baptist Norfolk and Calvary Presbyterian will remain open and so will the sidewalk east of the northbound lanes, the release said.
The roadwork is part of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s I-64/I-264 Interchange Improvements Project, according to the release.
According to the release, southbound traffic along the roadway will close again July 7-10.
