Decked out in leather and chrome, the Boneshakers Social Club may look like a motorcycle gang, but they’re hardly your average biker group. Since the club was established in 2005, they’ve donated more than $220,000 to charity as part of a commitment to helping those in need.
This commitment was made more than a decade ago, when the club was formed by several bikers who were regulars at Boneshaker’s Sports Bar & Grill in Virginia Beach. Though the club is not directly affiliated with the now-closed establishment, they carry on the legacy of the club’s original meeting spot.
The 65-member, non-profit social club directs most of its efforts to helping locals organizations and individuals in the community.
“We donate to a variety of different groups,” said Boneshakers President Ron Moore. “We like to help children and donate money to a new elementary school each month to help cover lunch costs. We’ve donated to people who have lost loves ones and those with cancer. We renovated a paralyzed person’s home to make it handicap accessible. We donate to the Missing in American Project, which provides military funerals for unidentified veterans. We really love to help people and that’s why we are all a part of this.”
In addition to new charitable initiatives through out the year, Boneshakers also holds several annual charity events, including the upcoming Bikes for Tykes event.
“We ordered 125 bikes and 75 helmets this year. We will assemble them on December 3rd and plan to give away to children in need the following Saturday,” he said. “Some of the kids are from CHKD hospital, others are for families that just can’t afford to buy their child a bike.”
Moore, who has been with the organization since 2007, explains why the Boneshakers group is such an important part of his life.
“Some of these people don’t have anywhere else to go and are so appreciative. When people appreciate what you do for them, it really warms your heart,” he said. “Who knows – sooner of later it could be me on the other end.”
