Norfolk launches real-time storm map that harnesses residents’ help

NORFOLK – Residents can now view a real-time map of the city during storms that pinpoints accidents and road closures by crowdsourcing the reports from the public.

The city posted a video this week describing its new online service Storm Mobile, which allows residents to document things such as downed trees and flooded streets at an address, street or block. Residents are encouraged to use the site only for major storms when the Norfolk Emergency Center is activated. 

Users can also leave comments. Each post is visible on the site’s map after approval by city staff. The service launched in June.
