Handel’s Messiah: The Virginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus will perform this popular show featuring many moments in Jesus’ life from birth to ascension. The musical performance features three parts. Tickets start at $25. The show is conducted by Benjamin Hous and features solo vocalists Joelle Harvey, Annie Rosen, Brian Giebler and David Kravitz.

Tis the Season at Old Beach Farmers Market: Check out local restaurants and artisans at this monthly event. More than 30 vendors line the streets with locally produced foods, beverages and products. Some places even take orders in advance to have them ready for pickup Saturday. Participants include Croc’s 19th Street Bistro, My Vegan Sweet Tooth, Rockafellar’s Restaurant and Three Ships Coffee.

Surf-n-Santa 5-miler: Ever wanted to run after sundown with the Holiday Lights on the Boardwalk lighting the way? Here’s your chance. The race starts at 4:30 p.m., sending runners down the Boardwalk for a finish at the Convention Center. Online registration for $65 closes Thursday night, but walk-up registration is available for $70. There are costume contests, a pre- and post-race parties Friday. Participants are encouraged to wear their best holiday gear.

The Nutcracker: Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Evil Rat King all take the stage in this classic ballet performed by local dancers and more than 100 local children. Live orchestra music will be provided by Symphonicity, the Symphony Orchestra of Virginia Beach. Tickets begin at $20.
