Virginia Beach brew pubs sweep at 2015 Golden Tap awards

Virginia Beach is the place for brew pubs and beer events in Hampton Roads, judging by VEER Magazine’s 2015 Golden Tap awards, which were announced Tuesday.

Virginia Beach entries Gordon Biersch (gold), Home Republic (silver) and Wasserhund Brewing Company (bronze) swept the brew pub category, while Beach locations accounted for four of the six finalists in the categories for best brewery event and best non-festival, non-brewery beer event:

Best Beer Event (Non-festival, non-brewery)

GOLD: Battle of the Beers @ Tapped

SILVER: 43 Hours of Sour @ The Birch

BRONZE: MOCA Blues & Brews

Best Brewery Event

GOLD: Treasure Chest Fest @ Green Flash

SILVER: O’Connoroo

BRONZE: Back Bay Kiss My Cask

The 2015 Golden Tap awards covered 25 kinds of beer and other categories. VEER Magazine publisher/editor Jeff Maisey wrote that winners were chosen by popular vote online (50 percent) and by a panel of judges (50 percent), with each judge casting one weighted vote per category.

Three Virginia Beach entries won a beer category: Back Bay Brewing Co.’s Steel Pier for light lager, Pleasure House Brewing’s First Landing ESB for British bitter, and Wasserhund’s Hefeweizen for German wheat.

Norfolk’s O’Connor Brewing Company won the distinction of Brewery of the Year with the most overall points.

Participating breweries included Pleasure House, Reaver Beach, Young Veterans, Brass Cannon, Wasserhund, Home Republic, Big Ugly, Smartmouth, Back Bay, Alewerks, St. George, Commonwealth, Wharf Hill and O’Connor.
