The police department’s economic crimes unit began looking into the case after it was contacted in early November by the city auditor and told that an IT inventory specialist was suspected of taking city property, according to a press release issued late Wednesday afternoon.

Additional audits were done, and a warrant for embezzlement was taken out Tuesday for John Wesley White, 30, of the 400 block of Kriste Court, according to the release. White was arrested Wednesday and taken to the Virginia Beach Correctional Center where he was later released on bond, the release said.

A man who answered the phone at a number listed for White at another address said White did not live there.

He is no longer employed by the city, and the case remains under investigation, police said. The police did not say how much property they suspect was taken.
