The Dolphins were 0-2 this season against the Marlins, but they found the third time to be the charm.
Ocean Lakes beat Bayside 25-22, 18-25, 25-18, 25-13 and clinched the conference’s No. 1 seed and automatic bid to the 6A state tournament.
“The boys played their best ball when their best was needed,” Dolphins coach Michael Boomer said after the game.
Junior setter Adreyune Husted (40 assists) quarterbacked an offense led by power hitters Derron Watkins (19 kills) and Sean Whiteman (17 kills).
“Like any team entering the playoffs, you want to be hitting your stride,” Boomer added.
Regardless of the Dolphins’ performance in the conference tournament, they’ve already earned a home game in the state tournament.
“We’re in a position where we’re not fighting for our life next week,” Boomer said. “We can hone in on the little things, try to improve in certain areas of the game.”
The conference tournament starts Monday, when the Dolphins face Landstown at Tallwood.
