Police trying to identify driver who died in fiery wreck on I-264

State Police are trying to identify the body of a driver whose vehicle crashed early Saturday morning on Interstate 264, overturned and became engulfed in flames.

The accident happened about 2:25 a.m. near the old toll plaza in Virginia Beach, according to a summary released by State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

A state trooper who was patrolling I-264 at the time saw the vehicle fully engulfed in flames on the eastbound side of the interstate. The vehicle, a 2008 Hyundai Veracruz, was overturned, the State Police said.

The State Police determined the driver had run off the road to the right at the old toll plaza, struck an attenuator attached to the jersey wall, overturned and caught on fire, according to its summary.  The driver was partially ejected, trapped under the vehicle and burned beyond recognition, the State Police said.

The State Police are working with the medical examiner’s office to identify the driver and notify family.
