Beach Police: Drunk driver hits squad car during DUI stop

Virginia Beach Police say a drunk driver ran into a police car that was helping at a traffic stop of another drunk driver on an interstate off-ramp.

The first traffic stop happened about 11:55 p.m. Friday on the westbound I-264 ramp to First Colonial Road, according to the police. The driver of that vehicle was identified as Robin Lynn Schmalbach, 51, of the 4500 block of Plumstead Drive in Virginia Beach. She was charged with DUI, according to police.

At about 12:16 a.m., a police car that was helping with the traffic stop of Schmalbach was struck by another vehicle. Police identified the driver of the second vehicle as Kayla Sierra Dean, 22, of the 1000 block Georgetown Road in Norfolk. She was charged with DUI and failure to yield the right-of-way when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle.

The police department said the accident caused minor injuries.
