Viola ‘Vi’ Grosso Stokes, 96, played cards with her bridge group for over 45 years

Viola ‘Vi’ Grosso Stokes

Viola “Vi” Grosso Stokes, 96, joyfully returned home to her heavenly father Tuesday, April 7, 2020. Viola was born in Norfolk and spent her youth enjoying the Pinewell neighborhood and the beach and waters of Ocean View.

Vi attended Norfolk public schools and graduated from Maury High School. She earned a B.S. Degree in Home Economics from Mary Washington College. She taught Home Economics at Blair Junior High School for six years.

In 1950, she married Dr. William A. Stokes, DDS. Vi and Bill raised a family and started a thriving dental practice in Norfolk. They were married for 52 years until his passing. They attended Park Place Methodist church until their move to Virginia Beach in 1973. Vi was also a dental administrative assistant and office manager, dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Vi belonged to the Tidewater Women’s Dental Auxiliary, United Methodist Women of Park Place Methodist Church and Virginia Beach Methodist Church. Vi attended services at Nimmo Methodist Church during her later years. Vi enjoyed playing cards with her bridge group for over 45 years. Gardening, reading, loving the family pets and researching healthy lifestyles were her lifelong passions. She could always advise you as to which vitamin supplements you needed — hence her long and very healthy life.

Vi was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill; brother, Julian Grosso; and parents, Ethel and John Grosso.

Left to cherish her memory are her son Col. Scott Stokes, and his wife, Delia; daughter, Janet Mikluschak; grandchildren, Shaun Stokes, and his wife, Noel, Christopher France, and his wife, Megan, and Crystal France; and great-grandchildren, Ronan and Eliza Stokes and Henry France.

The family sends heart-filled gratitude to the nurses and caregivers of Harbourway at Atlantic Shores and to private caregiver G.M.

Memorial gifts may be made to a charity God has put upon your heart. May God be with you always.
