Cheryl Durham Copeland

Cheryl Durham Copeland, 74, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 10, 2020. A native daughter of Virginia Beach, she was nevertheless a “Carolina Girl,” having been raised both here and in Carrboro.

She was a precocious young girl who grew up as the oldest of three sisters on 23rd Street at the oceanfront. She loved beach music and shag dancing, which inevitably brought her to the Peppermint Beach Club, where her life changed forever after meeting a handsome young musician named Kenny. They fell in love, got married and had three beautiful children, although their dance together would not last.

Cheryl was devoted to her family, and she loved her hometown of Virginia Beach.

The eldest daughter of the late F.M. and Jacqueline Durham, she is survived by her children, Kevin Copeland (Angela), Courtney Copeland and Kelly Copeland (Brett), all of Virginia Beach; sisters, JoAnn Ellington (Jim) of Chesapeake and Becky Durham (Joe) of Satellite Beach, Florida; and grandchildren, Jacob, Emily, Christian and Aayla, all of whom are left with cherished memories of their “Meenaw.”

There will be a small gathering from 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, March 14, at the Beach Pub in Cheryl’s honor.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
