Thomas V. ‘Tommy’ Irving

Thomas V. “Tommy” Irving, 76, loving brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. Tommy was surrounded by his loving family when he left to be with our Lord after a courageous battle against pulmonary fibrosis.

Tommy was born May 3, 1943, in Norfolk to Richard and Allie (Everett) Irving. He married the love of his life, Patricia Sue Bowden, June 12, 1963. As their love grew, they raised two sons, Tommy Jr. and Warren.

Tommy joined the Virginia Beach Police Department 1965 and retired after 37 years of dedicated service. During his career, Tommy was promoted through the ranks and retired as the deputy chief of police. Tommy most enjoyed his time as the commanding officer of Special Operations, Emergency Communications/911 Center and the Investigative Division.

Tommy was awarded a lifetime membership to the International Chiefs of Police for his dedication to policing. Tommy was a member of the following professional organizations: Virginia Chiefs of Police, The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 8 and the Virginia Police Association. Tommy was a member of the Lynnhaven Masonic Lodge, Virginia Beach, and was a master mason. Tommy is a Golden Gate University Alumnus, where he earned a master’s degree.

Tommy loved and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Tommy was proud of his grandchildren and loved to brag about their accomplishments. Tommy and Patricia have a second home at Lake Gaston and would have all the family there during the summers to enjoy the lake. Tommy loved the Lord and was dedicated to not only to reading his bible, but also to studying the word, reflecting and taking written notes on a paper calendar; he did this every evening during his quiet time.

Tommy loved many outdoors activities that are too numerous to list. Tommy was a dog lover, but learned to love cats later in life when two special ones came into his life.

Tommy was preceded in his journey to heaven by his father, Richard; and his mother, Allie.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; two sons, Tommy Jr. and Warren; brother, Herman (Buddy); grandchildren, Danieall, Roni, Trisha and Brandon; great-grandchild, Norah; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
