Dennis ‘Butch’ Courtney, 79, kept up with the best of them

Dennis ‘Butch’ Courtney

Dennis “Butch” Courtney, 79, passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, in the arms of his loving wife of 31 years and surrounded by family at his home in Virginia Beach.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 31 years, Virginia “Ginger” Courtney; children, Kim Tull, Pam Tigmo, Dennis Courtney Jr., Jim Stauffer, Troy Forehand, Christine Laxson, Dina Carter, Mike Stauffer and Alan Forehand; 18 grandchildren; brother, James B. Courtney Jr.; and many other family members and friends.

He was a member of Virginia Beach Christian Church and past member of the Moose lodge. Mr. Courtney (our WorkerB) retired twice. Once from Dover Elevator Co., and then from W.R. Grace Co. He continued to work part time at various companies. At nearly 80 years of age, he was working a landscaping job with Bill’s Landscaping Company. He could keep up with the best of them, and it’s what he enjoyed. Even though he was a dedicated worker, he was a man who knew how to enjoy life. His favorite quote was from his grandfather, “it’s not work that kills you, but the couch.”

He also took great pride in his home and yard, and when he would stop working, he would usually start again at the home front. He loved all his family dearly, and he and his wife Ginger shared a special bond and love that will surpass time. When asked about hobbies, he used to say, “Ginger” is my hobby.”

A celebration of life service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 7, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, with a reception to follow.
