William “Bill” Sawyer III, of Virginia Beach, passed away Monday, Jan. 6, 2020.

Bill was a lifelong resident of the Hampton Roads area. Born in Portsmouth to the late William and Estelle Sawyer, he was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Beverly; and son, Chris.

He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and East Carolina University. As a U.S. Army officer in the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. After leaving the U.S. Army, he served 20 years as a Reservist, leaving with the rank of major. He will receive full military honors at his memorial.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 34 years, Linda; son, William IV (Katie); stepchildren, Kelly (Donovan) and Chris; five grandchildren and one great grandchild; along with several lifelong friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Jan. 10, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 11, at Princess Anne Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation or your local SPCA or animal shelter.
