Wilma Bowman Egas, 92, taught with Virginia Beach City Public Schools for 39 years

Wilma Bowman Egas, 92, of Virginia Beach, passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019.

Wilma was the eldest of four girls born to John and Viola Bowman in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She graduated from Meadows of Dan High School, obtained a Bachelor of Education from Radford University, a Master of Mathematics from James Madison University, and an Advanced Graduate Degree from the College of William & Mary. She applied that knowledge by teaching with Virginia Beach City Public Schools for 39 years.

She loved to travel, which took her to many cities in the United States; Canada; and London, England. She met many friends through teaching, clubs and organizations. She was a worthy matron in the Order of the Eastern Star Berkley Chapter No. 52 and a royal matron in the Order of the Amaranth and Queen of the Daughters of the Nile.

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Egas, who she met on a bowling date, and they were married 23 days later.

She will be missed by her two sons, Robert (Ann) and Larry (Mary); and five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 30, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 31, at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
