Patrick Michael Finnerty, 78, enjoyed sharing stories of his days in the Navy

Patrick Michael Finnerty, 78, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019.

He was born May 27, 1941, to Mary Lally Finnerty and Michael Patrick Finnerty in Gary, Indiana. He is survived by his sister, Peggy A. Murphy; brother, Michael Finnerty; daughters, Suzanne Finnerty (Tina) and Stephanie Finnerty; grandchildren, Christina Policastro, Katherine Clairmont, Janie Brothers and Raymond Brothers; and his great-grandchildren, Liam, Levi and Olivia.

He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Finnerty; mother, Mary Finnerty; brother, Gerald Finnerty; and sister, Barbara Finnerty.

Patrick proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1980, when he retired as a chief petty officer. After his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he served as a DOD police officer and then worked at ODU.

He enjoyed reunions with his shipmates from his time in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed watching his favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys, and his favorite baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends telling stories of his Navy days.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, 1457 Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the funeral home chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks to make a donation to St. Baldrick’s Foundation in his name.
