Norman Elden Hammond, 95, a recent resident of Virginia Beach and former resident of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Winter Haven, Florida, passed away Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019.
Norman was born Oct. 26, 1924, in Hymera, Indiana, son of Wayne and Elzo (Phegley) Hammond. He was a graduate of Wiley High School, 1941; Indiana State Teacher’s College, 1948, with a Bachelor of Science; and served his country as an officer in the U.S. Navy.
He married Doris June Stott Aug. 27, 1949, and was married for 67 years. Together they had four children.
Norman began his career as a teacher, then moved to a publishing company selling magazines, earning as much money in four months as he did as a teacher in one year. He then continued a 32-year career with Chemcentral in Fort Wayne. Our dad was an avid golfer, fisherman and loved adventure. He was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Faith Baptist Church in Winter Haven, Florida.
Norman was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; and brother, Harold.
He is survived by his children, Carol Bowers (Dave) of Virginia Beach, Robert Hammond of Winter Haven, Florida, Cathy Jelsema of Virginia Beach and Dwight (Kay) of Manhatten, Illinois; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Nov. 2, at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home with Pastor Clark Halstead officiating. Internment will be held in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk.
