James Rufus Smith, 82, Air Force veteran who served during the Vietnam War

James Rufus Smith, 82, of Virginia Beach passed peacefully Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019. James was born March 14, 1937, in LaGrange, Georgia, to Hoyt and Ruby Mae Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jevene Smith; daughter, Brenda Willis; and numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

James retired from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years working as an aircraft mechanic before continuing his work for another 14 years as a civilian aircraft mechanic for NADEP. He was very proud of serving his country during the Vietnam War and was also a member of the local VFW.

James will always be remembered as a loving husband, brother and friend. He loved watching golf and taking long walks. He walked nearly 10 miles a day.

An honors service will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, where James’ ashes will be laid to rest at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk.
