Retired U.S. Navy RMC Roberto Guadalupe Diaz Loya, 79, formerly of Norfolk and recently residing in Virginia Beach, went home to his Lord and Savior Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019. He was born Dec. 12, 1939, in El Paso, Texas, to the late Albino and Luz Loya.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17 years old and traveled the world before being stationed in Norfolk, where he met the love of his life and raised a family. After faithfully serving his country for 26 years, he retired and eventually went to work for the federal government before retiring for the second time in 2001.
Roberto was an active member of the Little Creek Lions Club in Norfolk for 45 years, where he served in a variety of offices and received many awards, including the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest form of recognition and embodies humanitarian ideas consistent with the nature and purpose of Lionism. He was a longtime member of Vineyard Community Church in Virginia Beach. Over the years, he served in the food pantry, mission’s ministry, prayer team and was part of the VC Shepherds small group.
Roberto was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 45 years, Kathleen. He leaves to cherish his memory, two daughters, Krishna Loya (Eric) of Norfolk and Rachel Riggens (Larry Jr.) of Virginia Beach; sister, Maria de Los Angeles Headley (Victor) of El Paso, Texas; brother, David Loya (Sylvia) of El Paso, Texas; seven grandchildren, Tiyo Jr., Zenobia, Amiyah, Hayley, Leah, Larry III and Olivia; along with many other family members and friends.
The family will receive friends at noon, Saturday, Oct. 5, for viewing at Vineyard Community Church, 4444 Expressway Drive, Virginia Beach. A celebration of life will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the church. A graveside service with full military honors will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. A reception will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, at the church.
