After a 50-year sparring match, Derek S. Canaan, 62, of Virginia Beach, died after his final battle with complications from juvenile diabetes Monday, Sept. 23, 2019.
Born Feb. 23, 1956, in Monterey, California, he was the son of the late U.S. Navy Capt. Gerald C. Canaan and Ruth Canaan and oldest brother to Tom Canaan (Elaine) and Jerry Canaan (Kristi).
Derek will be forever remembered by his wife and best friend of 38 years, Linda Canaan. He was the devoted father of their daughters, Krista Baum, and her husband, Christopher, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Kara Gehan, and her husband, Bob, of Gunnison, Colorado. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Jaxon, Zoey, Evan and Heidi, in addition to his three grand pups. They always wondered who took first place with his affections…the dogs were probably the winners!
Derek grew up playing ice hockey and was the captain of the Cox High School football team and loved reminiscing about old football and track days. Derek received a master’s degree from Colombia International University, Colombia, South Carolina. Derek was an ordained minister and was a blessing to many. After he retired, he loved riding his bike and joking around with neighbors and friends.
Family and friends are invited to the celebration of life service at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at Trinity Church Oceanfront, 401 35th St., Virginia Beach.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
