It is with bittersweet sadness that Robert John Leketa, 69, of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019.
Robert was born May 10, 1950, in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony.
He is survived by his mother, Helen; brother, Anthony; sister, Cindy; wife of 40 years, Melanie; daughter, Stephanie (Bobby); son, Shane (Chrystal); and three grandchildren, Allana, Gavin and Charlotte.
From a young age and throughout his entire life, Robert was a talented and hardworking musician, serving 26 years in the U.S. Navy Band, achieving the rank of senior chief petty officer, playing various instruments, but most notably, the piano and the accordion. If you ever saw him play, you realized very quickly that he was a true showman and entertainer.
Along with being a musician, he was an avid fisherman casting lines all over the East Coast with friends and family. He was happiest whenever he had a fishing pole in his hand and the boat on the water.
Robert also proudly served as grand commander of The International Order of the Alhambra Padul Caravan 69 while volunteering and donating time and efforts to helping children in need. He also served as president and reunion coordinator of the Navy Musicians Association, which brings former and current Navy musicians together once a year from all over the country. Robert’s charisma, personality and ability to make others feel like they could accomplish anything will be missed but never forgotten.
Please join us for a welcoming ceremony beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a celebration of life Mass at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 22, at St. Stephen, Martyr Roman Catholic Church, 1544 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake.
