John James Byrd Jr., 18, beloved son and brother to four, passed away Friday, Aug. 2, 2019, after a long struggle with cancer. Born Dec. 13, 2000, in Los Angeles, California, John spent most of his days in Virginia Beach.
John was a recent graduate of First Colonial High School, Class of 2019. He graduated with honors. A member of the Patriots varsity soccer team and avid fan of the game, he continued to attend and support his team despite his hospital visits. John had a bright and compassionate soul remembered by many as a big smile with a hug. Anytime he was not with family, he enjoyed time spent by the beach, relaxing with good friends, eating any and all food and listening to his favorite music.
He is survived by his mother, Phung Bernier; stepfather, Nicholas Bernier; father, John Byrd Sr.; and siblings, Cadence Byrd, Ayden Bernier, Carter Isaiah Absolu-Byrd and Addison Bernier.

Memorial services will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday Aug. 10, at New Life Church, 1244 Thompkins Lane, Virginia Beach. A celebration of life will follow from 3 to 9 p.m. at 2452 Bullock Trail, Virginia Beach. Please wear bright and happy colors in honor of John and his vibrant personality.
