Mother Mary J. Hyman, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend, was called home to be with the Lord Monday, July 15, 2019. Mother Mary, 100 years young, was born June 30, 1919, to the late Charles and Sallie Mae Sutton in Edenton, North Carolina.

She accepted Christ at an early age. She served faithfully as a member and church mother for well over 45 years at New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ. She had a vivacious personality and loved everyone she had the pleasure of knowing.

Mother Mary loved the Lord and enjoyed serving, ushering and being a church mother to many members of the congregation. Mother enjoyed chewing her juicy fruit gum, soft peppermints and a good, cold diet pepsi. She also enjoyed and loved her family, good southern cooking, gardening, bingo and boy did she love her some good ol’ pig-feet. If you had the pleasure of knowing her, then you know she loved the Lord and was a dedicated worker who was truly committed to the task at hand. Mother had a great sense of humor and always lifted the spirits of those around her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Johnson; sister, Frances Hurdle; son, Dwight Earl Hyman; and close special family friend, Johnny Manning. Mother Mary Hyman leaves to cherish her memory two grandchildren, Alethea Woodley (Almanzo) of Chesapeake and Alester Beans of Virginia Beach; adopted daughter, Laura Crews of Virginia Beach; six great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; close special friend, Helen L. Manning; Helen K. Manning and Bea Gable (Joe); nine grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, and raised Gregory Sharp. Mother Mary also has a host of other relatives and friends near and far.
