Lula Burgess Dawley, of Virginia Beach, passed away at 7:34 p.m., Sunday, May 5, 2019.
She was born in Hillsbourgh, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Earle and Johnsie Mae Burgess. Lula graduated in 1943 from Hillsbourgh High School. She worked for civil service supply and comptroller departments for 30 years and was a faithful member of London Bridge Baptist Church and Irene’s Sunday School Class.
Lula was married 59 years to retired U.S. Marine Corps Master Sgt. Hubert M. Dawley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Dawley; sisters, Eula Dollar, Mary Elizabeth Holloway, Virginia Lee Allison and Margaret Louise Kiger; and dear friend, Herman Whitman. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Glenda Hallingshead and Charles Dawley; grandchildren, Todd, Greg and Ben Williams, Crystall Reder and Charlene Garrett; great-grandchildren, Austyn, Luke, Gabriel, Mason, Owen, Asher, Nicholas, Jacob and Lyla; great-great-granddaughter, Everly Jane; sister, Shirley Barham Young; as well as multiple nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 9, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home chapel followed by a committal service in Princess Anne Memorial Park Mausoleum.
