Russ “Rusty,” “The Reverend” Helgren, 72, of Virginia Beach, passed away Monday, April 29, 2019, at home of pancreatic cancer.

He is survived by his son, SunTemple; daughter, Dove; and grandchildren, Cheyenne, Madison, Dakota and Van.

He was a two-time high school All-State Basketball Team member, scoring more than 1,000 points in his high school career which included beating NBA Hall of Famer Calvin Murphy for a Championship in 1965. Russ attended Wesleyan University, where he was a basketball star and the first college player to wear a headband and ponytail while he played. Russ received a B.A. Degree in Anthropology.

An avid fan of Dylan, Hendrix and the Beatles, Russ was a teacher, business owner, gifted tie-dye artist and photographer, as well as a talented golfer. He also enjoyed writing and playing music. An original Space Ranger, he lived by the motto, “I am U.”
