Deborah A. Gegner, 58, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at her Virginia Beach home. She was born May 17, 1960, in Fort Lewis, Washington, to Lt. Col. William R. and Mary Patricia (McDade) Gegner.
She was a graduate of Frank W. Cox High School. She also attended Radford University, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Upper Elementary Education and Special Education. Deborah began her teaching career in Flevanna County, and then returned to Virginia Beach, where she taught at Parkway Elementary, and later, Trantwood Elementary. She touched the lives of many students in her 34-year career.
Debbi had many hobbies. She was a gifted basket weaver. Her talents earned her a place at the Blue Skies Gallery in Hampton, where she sold her baskets. She was also one of the Tidewater Basketing Guild. Anyone who knew Deb, knew she was crazy about her dogs. This love she had led her into the dog ring, where she would show her dogs and those of friends. Debbi’s life was filled with wonderful friendships. She loved spending time with them going out to eat, shopping and taking road trips.
She s survived by her mother, Mary Patricia Gegner; brother, Danny Gegner; sisters, Katie Sustarsic and Tricia Farsi. She is also remembered by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Family, friends, and others whose lives Debbi touched are invited to Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Drive Virginia Beach, Sunday, April 28. A viewing will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. with a funeral service following at 3 p.m. Burial will be held in Eastern Shore Cemetery following the funeral service.
