Josephine DeSoto, 87, passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, with family by her side.
She was born in Manhattan, New York, after her family settled in the USA following their journey from Santander, Spain, and then moved to Norfolk when she was six months old.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marcos and Bonifacia Abascal; and niece, Lucia Garcea Cannon.
She is survived by her sister, Teresa Garcea; nephew and nieces, Mark Garcea, Maria Garcea Wise, Rita Garcea Amorese and Anne Marie Garcea Yeattes; cousin, Sister Anita Abascal; and five great-nieces and great-nephews she helped raise, Sara Turner, Mark Cannon, Michael Cannon, Catherine Aebel and Adam Cannon; and five great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, Gregory, Luka, Hunter, Jaxon and Hannah. She was devoted to her family, Catholic faith, and BINGO! If you ever were to ask her how she was doing, she would tell you, with a big smile on her face, “I’m fine!” Her love and humor made all feel welcomed to be in her company.
A memorial Mass will held at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 1, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach. Inurnment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and School.
