Gertrude M. Mercer, 72, of Virginia Beach, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, after a long, brave battle with COPD.

Born in Staten Island, New York, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Mary McHugh. She worked as a computer programmer for many years, retiring as a V.P. from Bank of America.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin L. Mercer Jr., in 2016.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Bobby Mercer of Norfolk; sister, Mary Willman of Whidbey Island, Washington; sister, Margaret Kwiatkowski, and her husband, Robert, of Highland Mills, New York; brothers, James McHugh of Quaker Hill, Connecticut, Thomas McHugh, and his wife, Nansie, of Waretown, New Jersey, and John McHugh, and his wife, Sophia, of Staten Island, New York; and several nieces and nephews.

Her son, Bobby, and his partner, Anna, are deeply grateful for the excellent care, kindness and love she received from the nurses, doctors and staff of Beth Sholom Village.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
