Richard Hinton “Dick” Powell Jr., 83, passed on to his eternal life Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, his 83rd birthday, in Norfolk. He was born Jan. 12, 1936, in Norfolk, to the late Richard Hinton Powell Sr. and Katharine Wright Powell. He was an only child.
Dick was a lifelong member of Galilee Episcopal Church at the Oceanfront, beginning on the cradle roll in 1939.
Dick is survived by his wife, Carrie “Carei” Powell; and children, Ann B. Powell and Richard Hinton Powell III, from a previous marriage to the late Jane S. Powell. Dick is also survived by countless friends and folks who he helped in the community through the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center that he founded along with the late Rev. Dr. John H. Jordan Jr. and the late Frank Bragg in 1986.
Dick was a beach boy through and through. His love of surfing and riding his bike along the boardwalk contributed to his living a long and healthy life. A perfect day found Dick joyfully surfing the waters off Virginia Beach or Hatteras Island.
Dick’s memory will be cherished by many.

Professionals need to be educated so patients and families don’t suffer needlessly because of this. Knowing that he is finally at peace will see his loved ones through the loss of this beloved man who did so much for others in need.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Galilee Episcopal Church with Father Patrick Bush officiating.
