Nancy Jennings Arnold, 81, of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully at home Friday, Jan. 11, 2018. Born in Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Leroy Clark Jennings and Ina Vivian Aker.
Nancy was a 1954 graduate of Granby High School and attended the Norfolk Division of William & Mary (now ODU). Over the years, Nancy worked at Sears, Norfolk Redevelopment Authority, FCC, DePaul Hospital and the Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Nancy was a longtime, active member of Old Donation Episcopal Church. She was a dedicated lector and chalice bearer, Cemetery Committee member, head of the counters for financial contributions, trainer and scheduler for worship ministries, conducted home and hospital communion visits for the sick and helped in almost every aspect of parish life.
Nancy stayed very active and treasured her family and many friends; always enjoying celebrating their birthdays and other milestones. She was a warm, generous, gracious hostess and excellent cook. It was very important to her to reach out to those who were ill through thoughtfully written cards, food, flowers and visits.
Nancy is survived by her sons, Charles “Trey” L. Smith III, and his wife, Amy, sons, Carson and Alec, Brook J. Smith, and his wife, Martha, daughter, Sarah, and son, Daniel, Collin B. Smith, and his wife, Marla, son, Nathan, and daughter, Rachel. She is also survived by her former sister-in-law, Gloria Potter; niece, Page Roest; and numerous other nieces, nephews and stepchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph David Arnold III; brother, Richard Vernon Jennings; and her first husband and father of her sons, Charles Lambert Smith Jr.
A thanksgiving to God for the life and ministry of Nancy Arnold will take place at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, at Old Donation Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Old Donation Church, Building Fund, 4449 North Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23455.
