Velma Futer Washburn, 91, passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019. She was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to the late Omer Futer and Ellen D. Stoner, where she grew up until moving to Portsmouth in the late 1940s.
In 1961, Velma moved to Virginia Beach, where she worked and met the love of her life, Willard, who passed in May of 2000.
Velma was an office manager and secretary at United States Plywood, office manager and secretary at Vanguard Construction during the construction of the Oceans Condominium project and retired as the assistant vice president of Ameribanc. She and Willard were members of First Presbyterian Church. In their retirement years, they assisted in producing the weekly bulletins for the Sunday services.
Survivors include her son, W. Bradford Neal, and his wife, Jackie, and grandson, Christopher Neal, of North Carolina; daughter, Patricia N. Jewell, and her husband, Rick, of Virginia Beach; and stepdaughter, Susie, and her husband, Bill Skaggs, of Florida.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 7, in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
