Dorothy J. “Jean” White Gilliam, 90, the wife of the late Archer “Bud” Edward Gilliam Jr., of Norfolk, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2018, at Trinity Elms Skilled Nursing in Clemmons, North Carolina.
Jean, the only child of the late Walter Ellsworth White Jr. and Dorothy Godwin Olean Crowder, was born May 15, 1928, in Roanoke. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1947 and is an alumnae of Radford College, where she majored in Business. After college, Jean was the lead receptionist at General Electric in Salem and a sales clerk for Henebry’s Jewelers in Roanoke. Jean and Bud were married Jan. 7, 1961, in Roanoke and resided in Virginia Beach until recently. Jean and Bud were active members of Virginia Beach Community Chapel.
Jean is survived by a daughter, Susan Jean Gilliam of Williamsburg; son, Gregory Archer Gilliam of Winston-Salem; three nieces, Carolyn Buskey Hudgins of Mathews County, Nancy Buskey Butler of Virginia Beach and Ann Buskey Templin of Norfolk; as well as cousins, Pat Crowder Kessler of Roanoke and Catherine Spicer of Blue Ridge.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Trinity Elms Skilled Nursing for their outstanding care and attention during their mother’s final days.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 20, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. Burial will be held in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
