Louise Gruber Reese, 84, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018, at the Mennowood Retirement Community. Louise was born and raised in Austria.

She moved to Amsterdam at the age of 18, where she met a young Merchant Marine, Bill Reese, who would become her future husband. After moving to Newport News in the 1950’s, she graduated from Hampton Roads Business College. She was co-owner of Eastern Carriers with her husband. She became very active in the community. Louise and Bill were avid sailors and belonged to the Hampton Yacht Club. She played tennis for many years before falling in love with the game of golf. She was a member of the James River Country Club, Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, the Kiwanis Club, Women’s Club of Hilton Village, and a board member of Junior Achievement. Her other hobbies included playing bridge and gardening.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband, William V. Reese; parents, Karl and Aloisia Gruber; and her siblings, Hermine Poetscher and Karl Gruber. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Birgit R. Kingsbury, and her husband, Randy, and her beloved granddaughter, Sophie Kingsbury.

The family would like to thank the staff of Mennowood’s Comfort Cove for their amazing compassion and care.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 16, at Weymouth Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Reese officiating. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peninsula SPCA.
