Retired U.S. Navy HMCM Frederick W. ‘Doc’ McCarty, of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018.

He was the son of the late Frederick and Florence McCarty of Norristown, Pennsylvania. His legacy includes: 26 years U.S. Navy, SEAL Team 2 Plank Owner, lifetime member of the UDT/SEAL Association, 3 combat trips to Vietnam, 2 Bronze Stars with Valor, 3 Presidential Unit Citations, Leading Master Chief at Admiral Joel T. Boone Medical Clinic Little Creek, VA Eastern Regional Administrator for the State Health Department, Fleet Reserve Association, Hall of Fame (Military and Business), Norristown High School Pennsylvania, B.S. degree in Business from George Washington University, working at the 15th street pier, docent at the Virginia Aquarium, and mentoring six grandchildren. Fred was especially proud of his children and grandchildren.

Fred is survived by his wife of 57 years, Diana “Dee” McCarty; children, Wendy O’Connor, and her husband, Danny O’Connor, Kelly Goldsberry, and her husband, Tim Goldsberry, and Michael McCarty, and his wife, Paula (Brown) McCarty; grandchildren, Abby O’Connor, Tanner Goldsberry, Karly Goldsberry, Whitney McCarty and Cole McCarty; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Rose McCarty; and brother-in-law and wife, Jerry and Joann Flora. He had many caring and faithful nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Kevin O’Connor.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 13, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. Interment with full military honors will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 14, in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to UDT-SEAL ASSOCIATION, 1619 D. St., Bldg 5326, Virginia Beach, VA 23459.
