Donald F. Bennis, 67, passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2018. He was born in London to the late Fred and Olivia Bennis.
As a U.S. Navy dependent, he lived in Naples, Italy; Key West, Florida; Oxnard, California; and Indian Head, Maryland, before settling in Hampton Roads. Don graduated from Norview High School, attended North Carolina State and graduated with a BSBA from Old Dominion University.
After reading law, he passed the bar exam in 1980 and became a private practice attorney. He felt privileged to serve on the school board of Virginia Beach City Public Schools for many years. He was a longtime member of the ODU Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, Don will be remembered for his immense charm and humor, his dedication to family and lifelong friends and his service to the local community.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Tatman Bennis; son, Ryan Bennis (Lauren); daughter, Courtney Bennis; bonus daughter, Molly Vener (Matt); bonus son, Will Tatman; three granddaughters, Brianna and Audrey Bennis and Jillian Vener; two brothers, Tom Bennis (Marcia) of Minnesota and Steve Bennis (Karen) of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Judy Reon of California and Elizabeth Ben (Paul) of Virginia Beach; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. He will also be missed by his special group of diving partners, the Doghouse Divers.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, at Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach. Burial will be private.
