Nina M. ‘Dolly’ Batzel, 80, of Virginia Beach, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018. She was born in Grottoes to the late Gray and Charlotte Messersmith. Dolly was also preceded by her sister, Julia Harmon.

Dolly graduated from Madison College and was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Dolly was the consummate Navy wife who supported Tom with pride and sacrifice in his service to our country. She loved sharing time with her family and took immense joy in being with her grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 55 years, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Thomas J. Batzel; sons, John and Donna Batzel and Mark and Kathy Batzel; five grandchildren, Audrey, Ben, Natalie, Thomas and Adam; three sisters, Betty and Gardner Jones, Charlotte and Joe Brown and Eva and Ronnie Garber; brother-in-law, Bob Harmon; cousin, Doug Leach; along with extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, with a visitation one hour prior. She will be inurned at the Columbarium of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, at a later date.
