Betty Lou Cruz, 82, passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, in Virginia Beach.
She was born in the small town of Amonate in April of 1936 to the late George and Vada Hubbard. Betty is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Joe Cruz; sons, Jeff, and his wife, Christine, and Ed, and his wife, Wendy; daughters, Mary, and her husband, Andy, and Elizabeth, and her husband, Jim; grandchildren, Kalynn, Cameron, Savannah, Hannah, Lauren, Chase, Ethan, Kiley, Nathaniel and Logan; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her three sisters, Georgia Compton, Shirley Jean Hubbard and Brenda Sue Hubbard; and brother, Leroy Hubbard. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy “Topsy” Hubbard; and brothers, Joe Hubbard, Kenny Hubbard and Bill Hubbard.
In 1961, Betty met her husband, Joe, who was serving in the U.S. Navy, in Norfolk. Betty and Joe were married a year later in North Carolina. As a Navy wife, Betty, a coal miner’s daughter, would go on to travel and live in new places such as Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Charleston, Vallejo, Guam and Hawaii, creating new and exciting memories with her family.
Betty was best known for her gentle, loving and kind spirit. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was happiest when surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren, other family members and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, with a wake service at 7 p.m., at the Hollomon-Brown funeral Home, Princess Anne Chapel, 3445 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach. A funeral Mass will be held at noon, Saturday, Sept. 22, at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach. Betty will be laid to rest in Rosewood Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in her honor may be made to a cancer foundation of choice.
