Amanda B. “Anne” Burns, 86, passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2018. She believed in the goodness of God and always said that she would “go when the good Lord is ready for me.”

Amanda is survived by her son, Alvin E. Burns Jr. (Amy); daughter, Sherry B. Allen (Richard); daughter, Helen B. Farrell (Robert); son, Donald K. Burns (Donna); sister, Frances McNeil; and many grandchildren.

Amanda was a true homemaker. Though she worked several jobs in her younger years, her greatest contribution was the care and nurturing of her children. She believed in both formal and practical education and gave her children the best of both. She believed in the importance of a spiritual life. She was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Norfolk. In later years, she attended the Salvation Army of Norfolk, where she volunteered her time and shared her life experiences. She was known for her sharp wit, her sense of humor and her shared memories. She opened her home to those needing shelter or a temporary home. She recently moved into an assisted living facility.

The family expresses their gratitude and appreciation to Marian Manor Assisted Living Center, Westminster Canterbury Hospice and her many caregivers. Special thanks go to Brenda and Estela of Marian Manor and Libby and Amanda of Westminster Canterbury Hospice.

At her request, her body has been donated to the Virginia State Anatomical Program, Richmond, for medical research.

A memorial service to celebrate Amanda’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 25, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach.

Memorial gifts may be made to Special Olympics Virginia and Salvation Army, Norfolk.
