Joseph Robert “Bob” Stevens, 90, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017.

Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late Frank and Sadie Stevens. He was also preceded in death by his brother, William T. “Bo” Stevens; and sister, Shirley S. Doss.

Bob was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired after 34 years as a captain with Norfolk Fire and Rescue. A star baseball player at Maury High School, he was signed by the New York Yankees prior to being drafted into the Army. He played for the Army team that won the Military World Series in Europe in 1946. Injuries that occurred during war time service precluded him from having a major league career.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 70 years, Mildred F. Stevens; two daughters, Donna S. Smith, and her husband, Stephen H. Smith, and JoAnne S. Klein, and her husband, Dr. Jeffrey A. Klein; son, Gary R. Stevens, and his wife, Carolyn S. Stevens, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; two grandsons, Christopher S. Smith of Virginia Beach, Va., and Matthew B. Smith, and his wife, Rosemary L. Smith, of Suffolk, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Grayson S. and Isabella R. Smith, both of Suffolk, Va.; and brother, Frank G. Stevens Jr.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 6, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Princess Anne Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 7, at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Princess Anne Courthouse Rescue Squad.
