Jesse R. Black, 99, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017.
Born on Feb. 8, 1917, in Washington, N.C., he was the son of the late Edward F. and Mary Irene Latham Black. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 76 years, Mary.
Mr. Black is survived by his three devoted sons, Byron (Debra), Larry (Cindy) and Gary (JoAnne) Black; and four grandchildren, Rodney and Chris Black, Kirk Black and Kelly Black Franke. He was blessed with numerous great-grandchildren and a large extended family.
Jesse’s open heart and deep love for his family was the center of his life. He was a true southern gentleman with a strong work ethic. He retired from the civil service as a carpenter at Little Creek Naval Base. Born of simple beginnings, his life set an example for all who knew him. Jesse and Mary were a pillar of strength, hope and love to their family. Together, they lived every day as role models through their example, compassion and acceptance.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home, where a celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28. Entombment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. A reception will immediately follow the service at the funeral home.
