Bernice Hanson, 89, enjoyed gardening and crocheting

Bernice Hanson, 89, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 23, 2016. She was born Dec. 3, 1927, to the late Elizabeth and Robert Venning Sr. in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Hanson; sons, Henry W. Broderick and Fred R. Broderick.

She was educated in the Mount Pleasant public school system. Bernice attended Olive Branch AME Sunday School and Church as a child and later became a member of Beulah Gospel Tabernacle, Brooklyn, N.Y. After moving to Virginia, she became a member of Pembroke Manor UCC, where she served in several capacities.

Her hobbies included gardening, crocheting, reading, sewing, quilting, puzzle books and jigsaw puzzles.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Theresa Thrower and Loretta Broderick; two sons, Albert Fiol and Isaac Broderick; two sisters, Willa Mae Phillips and Shirley Venning; two brothers, Franklin Venning and Benjamin Venning; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Beach Funeral & Cremation Services. A homegoing celebration will be held 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 30, SonRise @ Pembroke Manor Christian Church, 600 Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach.
