Karl William Knewstep, 59, renowned for his skills with sailboats and sailboat racing

Karl William Knewstep, passed away at 11:17 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2016, at his son’s home while surrounded by his family.

Karl was born on December 11, 1957, to father, Edward Alan “Skippy” Knewstep Jr., and mother, Caroline Lynette Langner Knewstep, in Norfolk.

His father encouraged him in Boy Scouts and Sea Explorers, where he learned to appreciate the outdoors and sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. He became locally renowned for his skills and expertise with sailboats and sailboat racing. His mother provided an example of love and kindness, which stuck with him until the end. His provision and guidance as a father and grandfather were inspirational.

He worked as a checker and clerk in Local 1624 of the International Longshoreman’s Association for 39 years. His wit, charm, humor and kind heart touched so many! He will be fondly remembered and loved forever!

His legacy will live on with his son, Travis; daughter-in-law, Danielle; granddaughter, Caroline; stepdaughter, Angela; son-in-law, Brian; sister, Lynn; brother, Alan; and sister-in-law, Nancy, and their families.

A celebration of life will be held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at Lesner Inn, 3319 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23451. Open invite, no RSVP required.
