Melva Frances Riggs, 100, passed away Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016. She was a local girl born in Princess Anne County to the late Bennett W. and Rosa V. Hartley Whitehurst. She graduated from Oceana High School in 1933.

Mrs. Riggs was preceded in death by her husband, Travis J. Riggs; and her daughter, Martha Sue Riggs. Melva worked for Kellam High School in the cafeteria and was a lifetime member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where she played the piano for over 55 years.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, June R. Waterman (Maurice); sons, Terry L. Riggs (Chris) and James S. Riggs; nephews, Donavon Bonney (Jacqueline) and Arleigh Waterman (Jean); niece, Nancy Stamper; and four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Melva’s family is grateful to the many neighbors, family and friends who have supported her and her family.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at Tabernacle United Methodist Church with burial in Willowwood Cemetery following. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18 at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Maestas Chapel.
