Anna Margaret Rhodes, born Dec. 6, 1933, in Roanoke, Va., to the late Chester A. Young and Ruth Tate Young, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 6 in a local hospital on her birthday.
She earned her B.S. in Education from Madison College (JMU) in 1955, Master of Education from the University of Virginia in 1960, and Master of Education Specialist from GW University. She was a member Alpha Sigma Tau since 1952. She taught 10 years as an elementary teacher grades 3-6 and was a principal at Mailbu and Arrowhead Elementary Schools for six years. She was also an instructional specialist for 20 years and Virginia Teacher of the Year in 1967. She served as president of Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Society and vice president of the local local chapter; president of Roanoke and Tidewater alumnae chapters of AST, member and chairman of AST Board of Trustees, Panhellenic Delegate to NPC, and Virginia Beach president of AAUW and Virginia Division vice president. She was a founder and leader of Norfolk City Union of King’s Daughters, on the Governing Board of CHKD, Princess Anne CHKD, a member of Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, DAR, and served as secretary of local parish, Methodist church Sunday school teacher and superintendent of Children’s Sunday school programs. She was also a member of the church board and a participant in Meals on Wheels.
She was married 54 years to the late Judge Donald H. Rhodes, and is survived by sons, Donald H. Rhodes Jr., and his fiancé, Michelle L. Cadogan, of Wintergreen, Va., and Mr. and Mrs. Chet Rhodes of Virginia Beach; grandchildren, Emma M. Rhodes, Isabelle A. Rhodes, and Donald H. “Eli” Rhodes III, all of Richmond, and Wyatt C. Rhodes of Virginia Beach; nephew, Scott Young (Linda) of Richmond; and a niece, Donna Jo Sabatelli (Skip) of Clarksburg, WVa.
The family will receive friends starting at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. A funeral service will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Interment will be private in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
