Kenneth S. Reightler Sr., 91, 30-year veteran of U.S. Navy

Kenneth S. Reightler, Sr., 91, of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away on June 30, 2016.

Born in San Francisco, Calif., raised in Baltimore, Md., Mr. Reightler was veteran of the U.S. Navy, having joined the service at 17, before graduating from high school, to fight in the Pacific during World War II. Mr. Reightler was a “Plank Owner” of the USS Shangri-La and served as a crew member for numerous aircraft carriers and squadrons during the war.

He later served during the Korean War, assigned to a variety of shore and carrier-based squadrons and the Naval Air Test Center. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for rescuing a fellow crew member who had fallen from their ship.

Mr.. Reightler retired from the U.S. Navy, after 30 years of service, with the rank of lieutenant. He also was retired from Sovran Bank (formerly Virginia National Bank) with 12 years of service. He was a life member of the USS Shangri-La Reunion Association, the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 60 and the Military Officers Association of America.

Mr. Reightler was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, in 2013.

He is survived by two sons, Kenneth S. Reightler Jr. (Maureen) and James E. Reightler (Janis); four grandchildren, Katherine Parke (Joseph), Emily Reightler Young (Carter), Ann Reightler and Kelly Reightler; two great-grandchildren, Harrison and Lillian Parke; and two nephews, Robert and Douglas Campbell.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2016, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 1264 Great Neck Road, North, Virginia Beach, Va. Burial will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park.
