Artis Lydell Crank, 84, former restaurant manager and police officer known for his delicious pies and cakes

Artis Lydell Crank, 84, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at his home. Born January 2, 1932, in Stumpy Point, N.C., he was the son of the late Charles J. and Lavica S. Crank.

He was a graduate of Manteo High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War. He also served as a Norfolk police officer from 1959 to 1970. Later, he enjoyed being a restaurant manager for several area restaurants. He loved to see everyone enjoying his wonderful cooking, and he was especially known for his pies and cakes. He was also a real estate property manager at Ira Ball Realty and caregiver to his dear friends, Ira and Hazel Ball. Their son, Gary Ball, was an endearing friend.

Artis was a very kind and charitable man freely giving to anyone in need. His fulfillment in life was helping others. He was a loving and benevolent husband and father. He loved his family with his heart and soul. He was always there to nurture and praise each of us daily. His faith in our God and Father was his foundation for loving and living. His Suburban Christian Church family and friends were loved and very dear to him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Maloney.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 36 wonderful and beautiful years, Joan Marie Crank; sons, Charles Crank, Jimmy Maloney and Bill Maloney, and his wife, Amy; daughters, Kathy Buechler, and her husband, Jim, Marie Miller, Patty Bedrosian, Kathy Stone, and her husband, Rick, and Maria Woods, and her husband, Jess; his extended children, Teresa, Tracy and Terry Beilsmith; nephew, Kirby Tillett of Victoria; niece, Tanya Wescott of Manteo, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at the funeral home chapel. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Suburban Christian Church, Virginia Beach.
