Mary Jane Ballard of Virginia Beach, died peacefully in her sleep on February 13, 2016. She was born in Louisville, Ky., to the late William Arthur Hines Sr. and Catherine Brown Hines. Mary graduated from Mercy Academy, then worked in the civil service.
She married Joseph Howard Ballard Sr. in 1950, and they became the parents of seven children. She moved with her husband and children to Johnson City, Tenn., in 1963 and Kingsport, Tenn., in 1965. While residing in Tennessee, she was very active in the Catholic schools her children attended. In 1981 she moved to Virginia Beach with her husband and youngest son. Mary retired from the Virginia Beach school system, having worked in the cafeteria at Cox High School. She was a member of Saint Gregory’s Catholic Church, where she was an active member of the Legion of Mary. She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Gerard Ballard, in 1982 and four siblings.
She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Joseph Howard Ballard Sr.; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Ballard, of Kingsport, Tenn.; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Rev. Joseph Howard and Barbara F. Ballard of Baton Rouge, La., Daniel Anthony and Barbara B. Ballard of Highland Village, Texas, Douglas Michael Ballard of Chapel Hill (or Pittsboro), N.C., William Hillman and Jeannie W. Ballard of Charlottesville, and Robert Anthony and Deborah R. Ballard of Melbourne, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer Ballard-Mayfield (Kenneth), Catherine Ballard (Thomas Hackney), Jessica Ballard, Benjamin Ballard, Sarah Ballard, Joseph Ballard, Nicole Ballard, Michael Ballard (Sky), Samuel Ballard and Jacob Ballard; two great-grandsons, Sam Hackney and Braxton Ballard; one brother-in-law, Norbert; and Carole Ballard and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Rd., Virginia Beach, with a rosary service to be held at 7 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, with Father Mario Fulgenzi officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the charity of your choice or Saint Gregory’s Catholic Church.
