Fleatwood Morris Frias passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on December 3, 2015. Born in South Norfolk, VA on June 6, 1919, he was the son of Fleatwood M. Frias, Sr. and Sadie Inez Holt Frias.
He began his career in the grocery business at the age of 13 with his father. As an adult, he joined the grocery chain of A&P. His career was interrupted by service in the U.S. Army during World War II. In the early 1950’s, he joined Giant Open Air Market, a subsidiary of Rosso and Mastracco, Inc. Later he became the executive vice president and general manager of that firm. In 1967 he was awarded Sales Executive of the Year by the Sales and Marketing Executives of Tidewater. In 1975 he was recognized by Progressive Grocer Magazine for his service to the industry.
He was a longstanding member of Foundry United Methodist Church where he served in various lay leadership positions. He was a member of Kempsville Masonic Lodge # 179, Scottish Rite, Khedive Temple of the Shriners, as well as The Order of the Eastern Star. He was known to most everyone as “Red” and was noted for his light hearted sense of humor. He was an avid golfer, shooting his age when he was in his 70’s. He was a loving and caring husband and father; family was important to him.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Lois McGlaughon Frias, his wife of 70 years. He is survived by two daughters, Lois Frias Walter and husband Tom of Raleigh, NC and Claudia Frias Cummings and husband Jim of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by six grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
