John B. Gattuso, 92, played baritone horn in Navy, kept golf handicaps at Eagle Haven Course

Giovanni “John” Battista Gattuso, born March 9, 1923, passed away December 3, 2015.

Son of Carmello Gattuso and Fortunata Minniti of Paulsboro, New Jersey. Brother to Leo, Frank, Catherine, Mary and Antoinette. Devoted husband to Flora Macrillanti. Father to Carl and John. Grandfather to Dana (Keith), Tony, Teresa, John and Katherine. Great grandfather to Macie, Melanie, Joshua and Justin. Great great-grandfather to Landon. Survived by Carl and his wife, Johanna, and their children.

John graduated from Paulsboro High School in 1940 and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942. He played the baritone horn in the US Navy Band in Washington, DC from 1948 to 1958 and achieved Master Chief E-9 Musician in 1959. He retired from the US Navy in 1975. After retiring he worked at Eagle Haven Golf Course at Little Creek Amphibian Base, keeping golf handicaps, up to his peaceful death at age 92. He was a life-long and proud: Roman Catholic; Italian American; family man; neighbor; friend; musician; golfer; and Yankee and Redskins fan. A true gentleman.

Military funeral honors at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 14, 2015. Lunch reception immediately following at the Ocean View Golf Course, Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, please consider sharing your stories and remembrances of John during the lunch. Arrangements are by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel.
